When Bob Dylan released his album Together Through Life in 2009, I felt a powerful resonance with its title. I have been a fan of Dylan since my teenage years, captivated by the depth of his lyrics and the raw beauty of his sound. Over the years, his music has often been a source of inspiration for my artwork. Although Together Through Life wasn’t my favourite album of his, the song “This Dream of You” struck a chord within me, becoming a poignant and lasting influence. Several paintings in this collection bear its title, serving as intimate reflections of the emotional landscapes Dylan’s music evokes in me.
The paintings in Together Through Life are my artistic responses to Dylan’s songs, each piece capturing a moment, a feeling, or a vision inspired by his lyrics and melodies. The journey of creating this collection spanned 15 years, and today, I am honoured to share it with the world at The Reyburn House in Whangarei, where it is exhibited alongside my Prayer for Peace series. Dylan’s songs have always delved into the themes of war, peace, and social justice. His early work, especially songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind,” became anthems of hope. That same spirit has inspired my Prayer for Peace collection, a series born of deep concern for the conflicts and crises that continue to shape our world.
The recent war between Russia and Ukraine profoundly affected me. Coming from a war-torn country, I know the scars that conflict leaves on people and places. Two years later, as the world is rattled again by the eruption of violence between Israel and Gaza, with fears of escalation across neighbouring regions, my hope through art has grown more urgent. I organized a group exhibition under the same title, Prayer for Peace, envisioning it as a beacon of positive energy, a collective plea for harmony and understanding. The response was affirming, with people saying, “Yes, we need more of this.” It reminded me of the power of art to spark conversations, to heal, and, at times, to bear witness.
